You don’t have to be a runner to take part in Hook’s annual running extravaganza. An event like this, which in 2016 attracted just under 1200 participants, requires a well-oiled machine behind the scenes to make things run as smoothly as they do. Our marshals play a critical part in this and we are always looking for lovely ones to help us and the runners on the day.
So, if running is not your thing but a day in the fresh air supporting and enjoying your local community is, then we’d LOVE to hear from you. If you need a bit more convincing, how about these
1. You will get a free burger!
All marshals will receive a voucher for a free burger from the HSPA (Hook Schools Parents Association) stall at the end of the event.
2. You will feel the love!
Runners love (and need) marshals, the bigger the smile the better. When a runner feels like they’ve had enough and they’ve left the crowds behind, the next marshal they see may well be the reason they go on.
3. You will feel the buzz!
A lot is said about the runner’s high, the endorphin kick a runner gets after going for a little while. This is especially true for when running races like Hook. The great news for marshals is that it is also recognised that kind, helpful gestures also release endorphins. In psychological circles it’s known as the helper’s high! You need this in your life
4. You will get a lovely morning in the fresh air:
Whilst weather cannot be guaranteed, a lovely sunny morning is highly probable in the month of May. Our event in 2016 was beautiful. Fresh air has been said to be helpful for digestion, lowering heart rate, increasing immunity, boosting energy levels and stimulating brain function. Who knew! And you’ll be home in time for lunch (see point 1).
5. You will look lovely and feel great in Fluorescent:
A recent study has shown that wearing bright colours releases dopamine, the feel-good hormone responsible for improving our moods. You don’t get much brighter than Fluorescent yellow.
If you think you’d like to reap some of these benefits, the Hook Fun Run Committee would LOVE to hear from you. Or if you know someone who would be perfect, please pass these details on.
